I just purchased the new book by Mark D. Sikes. The foreward is written by Nancy Meyers, the famous film producer of such films as It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, and The Holiday (just to mention a few). I have always loved her decor in her films. The beach house in Something’s Gotta Give is BEYOND! Check out the link below from the Architectural Digest article by Nancy Collins.

This book has it all. The rooms feature fresh, and innovative style with a comfortable elegance that I just love. I am thinking of making a few changes to my family room. One of the things I would like to do, is add some blue and white elements. This book is full of inspiration.

For some reason, much of the room decor that I am enjoying lately are primarily blue and white. Mark has several great “looks” highlighting the beauty of fabulous blue and white decor. The book also has different sections with neutrals, garden style, brights, reds and other color combinations. All are just lovely!

Fortunately, if we decide to change things in our family room, we have neutral colored walls. The kitchen and family room are open concept, and the walls are painted in our favorite color – Cream In My Coffee by Valspar. We renovated our kitchen a couple of years ago, and wanted to change the wall color from a light yellow to a more neutral shade. After trying several samples on the walls, this was the winner. There is enough contrast against our linen/white cabinet color, and it looks great with everything.
Here is a great rug that I think will work with the other patterns that I am using throughout the room.
Right now, our colors are yellow and red, with toile drapery panels and a red and white buffalo plaid rug. Our family room is defintiely full of color, and we still like this brightness. We have white Pottery Barn slipcovered sofas that go with anything. These are the best purchase ever. They are so easy to clean and look fresh and new even after a year and a half. If I decide to change color schemes, I will need to recover the cornices in the family room and breakfast nook, and change out the drapery panels. I can add a rug that incorporates the blue, and get a few new pillow covers to finish the look. Also, a couple of different throws, and switching out a few decorative accessories will add to the new scheme.
I will still have some colorful items, such as, a yellow accent chair and a red sofa table. I will need to address the red table, as it might not fit in so well with the new colors. Maybe I can find something at Homegoods that will work there. Then, there is the dilema of what to do with the red sofa table when not in use. I do like the combination of yellow with blue and white, so the chair will work and a few other items that we already have.
